Sullivan is a Black Bear, 'Ursus americanus'. The smallest and most common of three bear species found in North America, black bears are about 4 to 7 feet (1.2 to 2 m) from nose to tail. They average 150 to 300 pounds in weight (68-158 kg) - although males as large as 600 pounds (270 kg) have been found. Excellent tree climbers, black bears live in forests, mountains and swamps. They roam territories as large as 15 to 80 square miles (39 to 207 square km), usually alone. In winter, black bears remain dormant in sheltered dens, living off fat stores from their omnivorous diet. Females give birth during this time, emerging ravenous in the spring. Never come between a mother bear and her hungry cubs! Measures 12".
