One of the first Butterfield Stage Coaches is now used for Stagecoach rides in Tombstone AZ. The Old Butterfield Stage had metal springs instead of the leather braces which made for a very rough ride. In 1857 John Butterfield won a government contract to be the first to run from St. Louis to San Francisco using the southern route. This made it possible to avoid the heavy winter snow. The trip was about 2800 miles and was made in 25 days with very few stops. Lack of water and hostile territory plagued the route throughout its existence.
