The express business in America had its beginning just 10 years before the California Gold Rush, when a conductor from a railroad began carrying parcels, as a convenience, between towns and cities on his run. The service became popular, and soon companies formed to operate between towns and cities throughout the country. Adams Express was one of the first of these companies. In 1918, when the government took over the railroads, the express companies merged as American Railway Express.
