Storekeepers in villages and small towns often ordered their merchandise from drummers, salesmen who traveled about the country in their fancy wagons carrying samples and merchandise. Along the way they would often stop at homes and peddle their wares. Drummer's Wagons made use of every bit of available space. The sides opened to compartments, the back exposing sliding trays. There were additional compartments under the floorboards and behind the seat. Larger items could be carried on top.
