The Butterfield Stage and Mail was one of the first overland stage runs. Bringing news and mail to the isolated westerners. In 1850 they merged with Wells Fargo. In 1857 the Butterfield won a large contract to deliver mail from St. Louis to San Francisco in 25 days. On September 16, 1858 the first run was made. The Overland mail continued for 2 1/2 years. Making runs twice a week. It would carry 6 to 9 passengers, a conductor and a driver. In 1860 Wells Fargo forced Butterfield out due to a large debt owed by Butterfield.
