In 1803, the United States purchased an expanse of land, then known as the Louisiana Purchase. President Thomas Jefferson sent an expedition to explore and map the new purchase. Led by Merriwether Lewis and William Clark, a troop of 32 men and a young Shoshone guide, Sacagawea, traveled west. The journey took two years to complete and the expedition endured many hardships. When completed, the journals were America's first look into the great unknown. 500 pages edited by Bernard DeVoto. 1953. Houghton Mifflin Co.
